There are not many times in one’s life when an opportunity to become involved in something so different and bold appears. The move to Lafarge Lake Park was a mammoth undertaking by the BC Highland Games & Scottish Festival organizing committee and the City of Coquitlam, which moved ahead by a year the leveling and returfing of the underused BMX bike park to make more space for the Games.
It was a move that was not without significant and unexpected challenges and great stresses even up to the Games opening. However, the character and determination of the many people involved helped to create and present a unique and memorable experience for years to come, and likely to vault the BC Highland Games & Scottish Festival into the next tier of Scottish cultural promotion to the general public of Metro Vancouver. It is also very reassuring that the City of Coquitlam is committed to additional expansion of the park over the next couple years to improve the presentation of the growing number of events and activities at the BC Highland Games & Scottish Festival.
The TD Community Plaza was a great highlight, with the large number of community residents who watched the Open Piping Piobaireachd performances on the Friday night and the Massed Bands and Awards Ceremony at the end of the Saturday. The imagery and music was spectacular, which goes a long way in the promotion of our art.
BCPA would particularly like to thank Mike Chisholm, Executive Director of the BC Highland Games & Scottish Festival, for his tireless and tremendous efforts in promoting, expanding and enhancing many elements of the Games and working so closely with the City of Coquitlam’s elected officials and staff to deliver the refurbished venue in time.
And finally to all the solo competitors, bands, drum majors, adjudicators, stewards, photographers, and officials who faced and met the challenges of the new venue and delivered first-class musical entertainment products greatly appreciated by the significant numbers of spectators. The picture of the Massed Bands and Awards Ceremony is the image of your success. Congratulations on a job well done!
