Annual Gathering

What: The BC Pipers Association “Indoor Meet” is held on the Friday and Saturday of the Easter long weekend. The Friday features solo piobaireachd competitions, professional drumming and a recital featuring the invited judges. Saturday events are the remaining solo events, a full band competition and the ceilidh in the evening.

Drumming Workshop:
The Drumming Workshops will be held in Blusson Hall Room 11901. The Registration Desk will have a map showing the locations of Annual Gathering events and activities.
The Drumming Workshop for Beginner, Grade 4 and Grade 3 will run from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. **Start and end time change**
The Drumming Workshop for Grade 2, 1 and Professional will run from 12:15 pm to 1:45 pm  **Start and end time change**

Important highlights in 2013:

  • Invited adjudicators Allan MacDonald, Colin Clansey, and John Scullion
  • Piobaireachd Events for Grade 3, 2, 1  and Pro are held on FRIDAY
  • Pro Side and Tenor Drumming events are on FRIDAY
  • Competing Pipers’ Association Combined B & C grade events return for non “Junior” (CPA) members
  • Grade 4 Band is a Quick March Medley contest
  • FREE John Scullion Drumming Workshops for registered drumming competitors
    • SFU, room TBA
    • Friday March 29th, 10 am – 12 noon (for solo grades Beginner, 4, and 3)
    • 1:00 – 3:00 pm (for solo grades 2, 1, and Pro)
  • Allan MacDonald will be conducting three (3) separate Piobaireachd Seminars at SFU, in Room 2290 of the Maggie Benston Centre building at the Simon Fraser University Burnaby Campus. The Maggie Bentson Centre is directly across from the Main Library.
    • Monday April 1st, 2:00pm until 4:30pm,
    • Monday April 1st from 7:00pm until 9:30pm,
    • Tuesday April 2nd, from 7:00pm until 9:30pm.
    • The cost will be $50.00 to attend one seminar, and $100.00 to attend all three seminars
  • The Ceilidh Returns! 19 and over pay to attend, 18 and under free – at the Halpern Centre, directly west of Images Theatre. The Ceilidh features:
    • The Clansey Cup is an impromptu piping competition where the winner becomes the judge for the competition the next year at the location of his/her choice. Last year’s winner Alan Bevan chose this year’s Ceilidh as the location so invited adjudicator Colin Clansey, for whom the event is named could see the event.
    • Short performances by the Annual Gathering aggregate winners
    • Pizza and beverages, of both alcohol and non-alcohol varieties
    • Free admission for 18 and under
  • On Saturday, all solo piping (including Professional) and drumming events start at 9 am AND the band contest starts at 3:30 pm (to start the Ceilidh earlier and to enable solo aggregate winners to perform at the Ceilidh)
  • New this year: The Super Aggregate winner of the 2012/13 mini gatherings and the Annual Gathering in Grade 1 side drumming will receive up to a maximum of $600 CDN toward an airline ticket to Glasgow, Scotland or Kansas City, MO to compete in the World Solo Drumming Championship or the Midwest Highland Arts Fund Winter Storm competitions.

Adjudicators Bios:

Allan MacDonald – Two time winner of the Clasp and Gold Medalist at the Northern Meeting, winner of the L’Orient competition, Piobaireachd scholar and recording artist

Colin Clansey – Captured 2nd in the Former Winners MSR and winner of the “A” March and S&R events at the Argyllshire Gathering, 2nd on two occasions in the Silver Medal

John Scullion – Four time winner of World Solo Drumming Championship and Lead Drummer of Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia when they won the World Drum Corps Championship in 1984
