| May 21, 2000 - Victoria Highland Games: The Robert Malcolm
Memorial Pipe Band (G3) had formed their circle, and were well into their opener.
Suddenly a video photographer pushed his way into the circle, (pulling drones off one
piper, and shoving the band's Pipe Major out of his way). The cameraman then
proceeded to wander around inside the circle for about a minute before a judge managed to
grab him by the shoulder. |
Here are a series of photos, ("Snappy" - ed from
video) from that memorable contest. The image quality is not great, and I have kept all
images to 25K or less - for loading speed.
I have 'zoomed' in on many of the images to show the 'interesting' stuff.
The good news - the kids did not miss a beat, but many hearts (outside the circle) were
indeed racing. |
It
has been proven, the only way to get into an actual competition circle, (if you're not
part of the band,) is to appear very suddenly, and just push your way in. It worked
for this doofus. |
Here Pipe Major Alison Dunsire is being pushed out
of the way (she was quite surprised by this), and piper Rob Abel's drones are about to be
hooked by the camera (Rob was surprised too). |
Now the drones are comng off Rob's shoulder, and
Alison has had to step forward to prevent falling. The cameraman did not seem to mind that
he has been slowed up by the hooked drones or the small girl that was in his way. |
Undeterred,
the cameraman proceeds to poke his large lens into Alison's face. At this point Rob's
tenor drones has been pulled off his shoulder, and they are still hooked to the camera. |
Now Rob's bass drone is leaving. About this time
the cameraman complete the drone tug-of-war game with Rob, leaving the pipes to Rob. |
The cameraman has stopped walking - for the moment.
Rob has calmly restarted his pipes, and is again playing. Asked about this later he had
the whole band laughing when he said he had practised having his drones pulled off his
shoulder - no big deal. |
As you can imagine, there
was much concern outside the circle - What to do? The judges, and stewards shadowed the
cameraman, but he did not get near the edge of the circle for a while. |
Most of what he did inside the circle was to create
visual blocks - here he squats down to be certain the entire drum corps can not see the
PM's foot - just kidding, but it did work that way. |
Finally, after a minute of
wandering, the cameraman get close enough to the circle edge to be grabbed by a judge. The
judge asks him to leave, the cameraman says something about "just a minute" |
And then the judge had to explain that he meant
RIGHT NOW! |
